Situated between Threlkeld and Keswick, Castlerigg Stone Circle is a prime example of the prehistoric landmarks that are liberally scattered across the Lake District.  The situation of the stone circle, at the foot of Blencathra, adds to the drama of this amazingly evocative scene.  I don't think we know why the builders of the circle chose this spot, but I would like to hazard a guess it may have something to do with the mountains above.  Perhaps the stones were used as some kind of compass to assist with navigation through the mountains?

This print captures Castlerigg and Blencathra on a sunny autumnal day.  The blue sky contrasts beautifully with the green of the fell side and the orange of the trees.
